National Disability Employment Awareness Month will be celebrated during the month of October 2016. The purpose of this month is to raise awareness for the progress and continued progress our country has made and continues to make hiring individuals experiencing disabilities.
Never heard of this awareness month? Here are some basic details on how NDEAM came about.
People with disabilities have not always been widely accepted in the workplace. It sparked more interest as service members who were disabled returned from World War II and needed to find jobs. The awareness of employing those who are disabled began the first week of October and has now expanded to the entire month of October.
The purpose of this month is to ensure those with disabilities will have a fair opportunity for employment. It also allows employers the knowledge they need to hire individuals who have disabilities. “By increasing awareness for all members of the workforce, we build a culture that embraces diversity and inclusivity.” It is important to realize that all people, no matter their disability, can offer a unquie skill set and ability to get the “job” done.
